News, what's happening, birthdays & anniversaries & so much more!

Dear Members and Friends,

The primary purpose of the Church is to do what Jesus commanded in Matthew 28:18-20, “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.”
If we are not fulfilling this Great Commission from Jesus, we are nothing more than a social organization. Ouch! I don’t want to be that – do you?
Our Christian Education committee takes the Great Commission seriously; they are entrusted with the responsibility to provide for the spiritual nurturing of the youngest child and the oldest adult. It is very hard work – and requires lots of prayer, willing servants to teach, facilitate, and offer support in other ways. THANK YOU to our teachers who give so faithfully to our church family: Emma Baker, Stephanie Shoemaker, Twila Snyder, Donna Hays, John Boozer, Joni Frey, Dawn Johnson, & Phyllis Ciarrocca. Please pray for them regularly, and please step forward to offer your gifts in Sunday school. The Christian Education committee is ready to help you learn how to become an active part of the spiritual nurturing of our church family. We need you to say, “Here I am. Send me.”
In addition to what we provide in Sunday school in order to make disciples of Jesus, our worship gatherings are also focused on helping all of us know, love, and serve God with greater passion. Sermons in the month of May will be aimed at helping us better understand our calling as believers in Christ. We started in April with “What is a Christian?” and “What Does a Christian Do?” In May we will continue with
teachings about “Where is a Christian to Go?”
“How (not what) Should a Christian Think?” and “What Should be the Motive of a Christian?” On May 25th, member George McCardell will lead worship for us on our first “early” Sunday. John and I will be attending Falling Spring Presbyterian Church in Chambersburg to be part of celebrating the baptism of our granddaughter, Taylor Marie Daynard!
Do you know someone who has given up on church, but not given up on God? I know lots of people like this! Please join me in praying for those who are trying to sail their ship of faith alone. I know I could not continue in faithful living without the support of the church around me. Making disciples is a group effort. Being a disciple must include group interaction and accountability. Let’s make sure we are fulfilling the Great Commission by being faithful in prayer for ourselves and others, and being faithful in practice so that others will see and believe!
Love, Meagan

P.S. On Tuesday, April 22nd, I was installed as the Vice-Moderator of the Presbytery of Carlisle at the Paxton Presbyterian Church in Harrisburg. I resisted, but God insisted, placing within my heart a desire to lead like Jesus in new places to grow my faith and intensify my dependence on God alone. I will no longer serve on the Presbytery’s Committee on Ministry, but will instead take a seat on the Coordinating Council (sort of like the session of the Presbytery). Please pray for me as I continue this journey of faith with different ecclesiastical responsibilities.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

NOTES OF THANKS & OTHER LETTERS

Dear Church Family,

We would like to thank you for the cards, thoughts, and prayers shown to our family after the passing of our father Michael Cook. It’s comforting to know that we are loved by Gods family in time of sorrow. May we always give praise to our gracious Lord for everything we have and all the love he provides.

Thank you,

Mark, Jacki, & Wade Cook

Pastor Boozer & UPVPC,

Thanks so much for allowing Child Evangelism Fellowship to use your church for our Bible Release again this year - 203 children were enrolled this year!  We appreciate the opportunity we have to teach these precious ones about our Savior.  We could not do what we do without such an accommodating facility.  Thank you for your support, encouragement and prayers.

In Him, Diane Pomroy

Dear UPVPC,

Thank you all for the lovely gifts [given during Easter through the Deacon’s Easter project]. We can use all of these things.  May God bless you for your kindness.

With love from all at Aprontree

Dear Meagan & UPVPC,

I thought I would send you and the rest of the congregation a postcard from Tanzania!  I have been doing and seeing so much since I’ve been here!  I just got back from a week long camping trip in the Serengeti.  It was so beautiful!  A little frightening at night because you could hear lions close by and hyenas would come into camp, but a great experience. Thank you for keeping me in your prayers and I am looking forward to rejoining you soon!

Nicole Parker (a student at Hollins University, and Shade Gap resident)

We extend our sympathies to the families of Phillip Machusko, Alice Bair (aunt of Bob Myers),and David Peck (uncle of Betty Myers). May God bring you peace, comfort, and special remembrances of joyful occasions during your time of mourning. May we, as a church family, share mercy with these families during this time, and may we willingly extend Christ’s love in ways that build up the Body of Christ and glorify our Father in Heaven.

Special Thanks to those who helped fix Gladys Piper’s porch: Don Umbrell, George Baker, Mark Frazier, Hubert Burns, Mark Hart, Keith Hart, Mark Cook, Jim Miller, and Larry Carlin (who organized this wonderful team).  May God bless you all for your service, and may the laughter you shared resound in your hearts for a long time!

MISSION TRIP UPDATE
The mission trip this summer is to Sunset Gap in Cosby, TN. The team is currently taking orders for Marianna’s hoagies and pizzas. Orders are due April 28th and will be delivered to you on May 5th. Two yard sales are also planned for May 10th and May 26th. Items for donation can be delivered to the church the week prior to each yard sale. If you need items picked up, contact John Boozer at 360-8300 or Neil Hill at 349-7520. The team is also selling “shares” in the mission team. Shares can be purchased in $5, $10, $25 or $50 certificates. The share indicates that you have invested in the mission team, and the certificate is signed by a mission team member. Help support the team!! In Cosby, we will be working on painting and home improvements while on site. The mission team members are: John and Meagan Boozer, Tammy and Mandy Hart, Wanda and Laurie Ruby, Brenda Hart, Wally Hoffman, Harvey West, Marvin Hammond, Betty Myers, Laura Thatcher, Jesse Eaton, Josh Atkins, Kristie Crouse, Abbi Gaydosh, Resa Irvin, Kaitelyn Hammond, Melanie Crider, and Neil & Jackie Hill.

Youth Group News
The youth will be making their 5th annual trek to CREATION 2008 in Mount Union for a week of Christian musicians and speakers from June 25th-28th!! Out of 40 tickets purchased, there are 10 tickets remaining for the entire event; however, you don’t have to stay the entire time (it’s cheaper to get a ticket for the entire event than it is to purchase a daily ticket). The ticket cost is $85.00. We appreciate food donations such as: water, Gatorade, Propel, bread, rolls, hot dogs, burgers, fruit, cereal, cookies, etc. If you would like to donate food, see Jackie Hill. Whether you are a youth or an adult, this event may be the highlight of your summer, maybe even your life! Don’t miss it!

The first Thursday of May each year is
The National Day of Prayer. This year the first Thursday falls on May 1st.  The theme for this year is "Prayer! America's Strength and Shield" and is based on the verse from Psalm 28:7 - "The Lord is my strength and shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped."

The UPVPC Sanctuary will be open for prayer beginning at 8 a.m. We hope to have people praying constantly throughout the day for the world, for our country, for families, and for churches. You are invited to come and pray in silence at any time that day.
A prayer guide will be provided for your use as you enter the Sanctuary. We will conclude the day with a prayer service led by area pastors from 7 to 8 p.m. More information about the National Prayer Day can be found on the web at: http://www.ndptf.org/home/index.cfm

Trustees Update
A work day is scheduled for Saturday, May 3rd, beginning at 8:30 a.m. We will be working on cleaning the cinders from the parking lot and grass, refreshing the mulch in the gardens, raking, planting grass seed, picking up sticks, and a few other projects. All members and friends of the congregation are invited to pitch in and spruce up the grounds for Spring!
The basement project is scheduled to begin in May and the new sound system will be installed in early summer. Certificates of deposit purchased from money donated to the church through the will of Eleanor Groce to the Men’s Sunday School Class and the Semper Agnes - Women’s Sunday Class will be used for the sound system project. Trustees and Session approved the addition of mulch in the fenced area for the Head Start play area.

OFFICE HELP NEEDED: The ministry assistant position at UPVPC is reopening for applications. This is a 10-hour/week position, beginning at minimum wage. The person who is called to this position must be adept on the computer, have good communication skills, be hospitable, flexible, dependable, and have a willingness to serve others. Application packets are on the bulletin board beside the church office, or call the church to have one mailed to you.
