Who, what, where, when & how! Birthdays, Anniversaries & More!

Dear Members and Friends,
We are in the midst of an intense time of study and reflection in the “I Saw the Lord” Lenten series. Forty adults are gathering together on Sunday mornings at 9:45 a.m. to view a video conversation with Anne Graham Lotz, Henry Blackaby, and Crawford Loritts. Following the video, each group is dismissed to their separate rooms for personal application of the teaching of the Scriptures. Stories, struggles, and laughter is shared as the biblical story meets our lives in real ways. I am grateful to Amy Earnest, Glovia DiSylvester, Jackie Hill, and George McCardell for their willingness to lead a small group during Lent. I’m also grateful for the commitment of John Boozer and the youth class to dig into this study in a unique way. They gave up their comfy youth room to accommodate an adult group, proving their willingness to “give something up for Lent.” Thank you!
Thank you, also, for those who erected the cross for the front of the sanctuary again this year. Standing and singing, “The Old Rugged Cross,” with a real cross as our visual, is such a deep way to worship and give thanks for all Jesus has done for us. He truly is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He truly is our hope and our joy. Jesus is our redeemer, our friend, our intercessor, and our living water. I pray that each of us will come to love him more during our approach to Calvary and the celebration of the empty tomb!
Please don’t miss the special opportunities to worship on Maundy Thursday, the 20th of March at
7 p.m., and then with the community for the Good Friday service at 7:00 p.m. on the 21st. May we do as Deuteronomy 6:4 commands, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart. Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.”
By our words and our witness, may we teach those who come behind us the wonder of the ways and words of God! Love, Meagan

COMMITTEE & BOARD NEWS
The three main Session committees for 2008 have met and gotten organized for the year. The Worship Committee is made up of Pat Allison, elder chair, Christine Metcalfe, George McCardell, Brenda Hart, and Amy Earnest. Upcoming communion dates were recommended to the Session for approval as follows: Maundy Thursday (March 20) by intinction; Easter Sunday (March 23), served; Pentecost (May 11), served; summer communion (August 17), served; worldwide communion (October 5), served; 1st Sunday of Advent (November 30), served; Christmas Eve by intinction. In regards to worship, it has been decided to stop the practice of sending a clipboard around the sanctuary during worship to sign up for various responsibilities. Tables are placed at both entrances to the sanctuary with sign-up sheets for upcoming places to serve and events. Worship attenders, please take the time to stop at the tables! Thank you!
The Mission & Outreach Committee is made up of Dawn Smith, elder chair, Bob Myers, Ruth Frazier, Deb Eaton, Keith Hart, Winnie Agett, & Teresa Miller. Our One Great Hour of Sharing goal for 2008 is $1000 by Sunday, March 23rd. This fund provides important support to people all over the world in crisis situations. Please give generously! The committee released our second payment of $4500 to Krislund Camp and Conference Center for the Adult Lodge construction, and committed $365 for the youth’s efforts through the 30-Hour-Famine. $1/day feeds 1 child. How many dollars do we waste each day that could help a hungry child?
Finally, the Christian Education Committee is made up of Joni Frey, elder chair, Mark Hart, Dawn Johnson, and all of our Sunday school teachers. Our mission is to teach the Word of God accurately and enthusiastically to the church family and to the surrounding community in an inviting, organized, stimulating, and loving environment. We are challenged each month to provide the very best for our students inside and out of the church family. Please pray for us – and give suggestions to help us help you grow into faithful, joyful disciples of Jesus Christ!

Please say a special prayer for each couple or individual as their day of celebration arrives:

“Submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James 4:7-8

WHAT THE DEVIL WANTS US TO BELIEVE ABOUT PRAYER:
That we do not know how!
That we do not have time!
That we are not good enough and struggle too much in life to pray!
That God will not hear us today, because we missed time with Him!
That praying is not our main thing!
That we do not need a stronger prayer life, because we are already close to God!
That we are already satisfied and blessed so we don’t have to pray!

VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER UPDATE!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 2007 Turkey Supper and Bazaar. Through our efforts, we were able to send a little over $10,500 to the Board of Directors of the Medical Center, which included a generous year-end gift from the Presbyterian Church of Shippensburg. God is working to help the people of this valley!
Dr. Johnston has seen patients on a semi-regular schedule, finding a filled waiting room from time to time. The Board continues to search for a physician who will provide regular office hours for our friends and neighbors. In the meantime, the money donated is being kept in a fund that will help support a new practice as God provides. Please continue to hold this need in your prayers.

IS OUR CHURCH HOSPITABLE?
We might think we are – but are we really?

Everyone is invited to come to a training meeting with Rev. Dianne Salter, District Deacon with the United Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 25th from 6:30-8 p.m. Rev. Salter will challenge us to think about how we welcome strangers into our midst. She will help us evaluate what we do – and give us ideas to implement what we could do differently. Please make plans to come and be part of making our church a beacon – shining the light and love of Jesus Christ!

A NEW MEMBER’S INQUIRY CLASS WILL BEGIN ON WEDNESDAY, MARCH 5TH AT 6:30 P.M. IF YOU WANT TO EXPLORE MEMBERSHIP AT UPVPC, PLEASE CALL THE CHURCH OFFICE AT 349-2603 AND LET US KNOW YOU PLAN TO ATTEND. THANK YOU!
